House of Tanners Restaurant sits right in the heart of Strasbourg’s historic La Petite France district, making it an appealing spot for those wanting to soak up the city’s old-world charm while enjoying a meal. This is a full-service French restaurant rooted in Alsatian tradition, marked by its rustic décor and a setting within a centuries-old building that’s part of the rich tapestry of the neighborhood.

The atmosphere strikes a balance between warmth and formality. Inside, wood beams and traditional furnishings evoke the feeling of a winstub—Alsace’s cozy tavern-style dining. For those visiting on warmer days, the quiet garden terrace by the water offers an inviting little retreat from busier streets, though seating by the waterways tends to be limited by window design and flower pots that soften the view.

House of Tanners is best known for delivering classic regional fare with a focus on dishes like Choucroute Maison – a hearty plate of mixed meats paired with sauerkraut – alongside specialties such as snails in garlic butter, French onion soup, and magret de canard with honey and spices. Wine is naturally a highlight here, with Pinot Noir among the offered selections complementing the rich flavors on the menu.

The restaurant tends to attract both visitors drawn by Strasbourg’s historic district and locals who appreciate traditional Alsatian cooking. Service is generally attentive and polite, creating an unhurried dining experience suitable for leisurely lunches or relaxed evening meals. This makes it a comfortable choice for couples, small groups, or families, although summertime visits point toward the terrace as the preferable dining spot to avoid stifling indoor warmth.

For those less fluent in French, the staff’s patience makes the ordering process approachable despite occasional menu language barriers. While some dishes may strike as more average compared to other local options—like onion tart—the well-prepared snails and desserts such as fondant au chocolat stand out as enjoyable treats. Expect mid-range pricing reflective of the location and traditional fare, with a meal often accompanied by a glass of bubbly or a picon bière for a touch of local flavor.

Visiting House of Tanners offers more than just a meal; it’s also an experience of dining steeped in Alsatian culture amid Strasbourg’s historic ambiance. Its location and character appeal most to those looking to combine traditional French cuisine with scenic, relaxed surroundings that reflect the rhythms of the city rather than a fast-paced tourist hustle.

We emailed to book a table to have our Christmas lunch here in October. They were very polite and replied immediately. When we arrived we were given a table for 2 on the window upstairs which was a beautiful spot. We were not rushed. The service was very good and polite. We were not sure what the food would be like as our French is minimal, however we had the chicken and the fish. Both absolutely delightful. Our sweet was a total Christmas surprise and was sensational. We finished with a very well brewed coffee. We highly recommend this restaurant, we would love to do it all again.

Seems like a very tourist place, the food was more than average, but the interior is quite nice.

Recommend visiting! Delicious food here! I had the duck and chocolate fondue cake which I enjoyed. Service was friendly and efficient, smooth process ordering. Loved being able to experience being in such a building with its rich history. Cons; -Unfortunately you can’t see the much of the waterways when seated due to the design-(high window sill with flower pots) , however you can still see the beautiful buildings. -Menu book has print which is not clear to read ( it urgently needs replacing as it gives a poor initial impression once you are seated) Overall happy I visited , thankyou

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 – Traditional Alsatian Charm with a View I had lunch at Maison des Tanneurs, a historic and charming Winstub in the heart of La Petite France. The setting is beautiful — especially the quiet garden terrace by the water, which feels like a little escape from the crowds. I ordered the famous Choucroute Maison, which came with a variety of meats. The flavors were authentic, but I found the meat a little dry. Still, it was a solid and traditional experience overall. The mustard and horseradish on the side were excellent and added a nice kick. Service was friendly and attentive, and the ambiance felt warm and very local — not overly touristic despite the central location. Would I return? Yes — especially for the setting and atmosphere. But next time, I might try a different dish. Perfect for those who want to experience traditional Alsatian cuisine in one of Strasbourg’s most picturesque corners.

The snails were a success we had so much fun with it as entrées at the beginning of our evening here. The Tarte aux oignons howerver was better elsewhere in Strasbourg. The soupe à l’oignon so tasty. With champaign 65€/person. A so kind and attentive service. The service team take really good care of us we were 9 with kids. In summer the serve only at the terrace inside too warm. Lovely romantic atmosphere outside on the edge of water and also with the boats coming away through the water navigation lock right there form the restaurant’s terrace. Lovely evening with the boat shows for kids and adults. The choucroute is amazing. Le dessert Prune plum au Pinot noir is so worth the price. Good espresso. The “Poire Belle Helène” dessert is a flop too much Crème Chantilly but the chocolate sauce is so tasty. It is a revisited version not the typical one. Kids menu available. The Wiener schnizel was tasty. Toilets downstairs clean. In general the price/quality ratio is good. Reservations highly recommended. Only 10 max tables under sunshades. Closed sundays.

I went to try the famous meat choucroute and every component was actually flavorful, albeit too salty. The staff tried to accommodate (thank you!) but I still could not finish. This was my first meal in the city so I was not sure if it was because my taste buds not adjusting. However the next day I went to an equally (or more?) famous restaurant with a similar dish and their salt level was absolutely fine! Overall, its still a small charming restaurant and given time, I would still go back to try their other dishes and actually get a table next to the window to see the beautiful scenery.

I had a lovely lunch here, the food was different and very flavorful. The sauerkraut I tried is absolutely delicious, it was the best I’ve had. I ordered the deer medallion which came with a hearty rich gravy/sauce. There was spaetzle, some potato puree, red cabbage, an apple which had been roasted in flavor. It was all quite delicious and the side fruit and berry compote complimented the deer very well. Mom ordered the pig knuckle with sauerkraut. That was delicious, and paired with their mustard, even better.

I have gotten the recommendation for this restaurant from someone that lived in strasbourg and I am not disappointed. I found the portions to be quite big for a restaurant with a more formal setting. The duck was incredible. I can also recommend the snails. The restaurant is obviously not cheap, but I would say it delivers for its price tag. The atmosphere is very cozy because it is dimly light and they have few tables. That is why I highly recommend to reserve in advance! The waiters also have been very efficient and friendly. The bathroom is goof for french standards ;)
